She then joined the National Women's Soccer League NWSL (formerly the WPS) created in response to the WPS's dissolution. Rapinoe first participated in this tournament in the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2011. She was instrumental in leading her team U.S. Women's World Cup team to consecutive victories in the year 2015. In 2018, she assumed the role of cocaptain for the U.S. team. Rapinoe scored two goals when the United States beat Australia 4-3 in the bronze medal match during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Japan had been delayed from the Olympics until 2021 because of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
